Rather than try to fix the teamID's, you'd probably be better off to start assigning them from scratch. I've found a lot of inconsistencies, especially in the 19th century, that I can't resolve using your modified teams table. For instance, Henry Porter has teamID of MIL (Milwaukee). He played in 11 games for the Milwaukee Union Association Club in 1884, 142 games for Brooklyn, and 59 games for the Kansas City Cowboys.
