The kid thinks an A- is so bad that he doesn't even think it's worth saying A-. He just makes it a B. He probably didn't work hard (or really did get a B, but because he's a smart kid, the teacher moved it up to an A-). He's so ashamed of an A- that he thinks it should have been a B.
