I've found that it seems to be sports in general. The Olympic broadcast is one example that I found today. Felt like I was watching an infomercial.

And shortsighted. The way to get folks interested is to have many qualified folks compete for the title and celebrate not only the history of the sport, along with concentrating on the sport, not to have a demolition derby with multinational advertisers. The accidents were entertaining.....when I was like eight. Plus it'll get detractors something to zero in on....well that and all the tracks looking exactly the same.

As for the original question. it waned in the 90's with the two folks that I did follow retired (Bill Elliott and Richard Petty), and what I felt was the sterilization of the sport.
