Blue Jays Fire GM - Ryan Stewart Hired as New Boss

April 3rd, 2009

With the 2009 Regular season days away the Toronto Blue Jays have announced that they have terminated the contract of GM J.P. Riccardi and hired Ryan Stewart to be the teams new General Manager. Riccardi was hired on by the Jays in November of 2001 to take over for former GM Gord Ash. Riccardi was at the helm for 8 seasons and during his tenure the club was 647-648. The teams best finnish was in 2006 when they went 87-75 and finished in 2nd place in the American League East but were still 10 games back of the division leaders.

After 8 seasons and 0 playoff appearances the fans and owners (Rogers Communications Inc) were getting restless and decided it was time for a change. The Jays are in a very sad state, they have not finished better than 3rd in the division in the past 3 seasons and boast a farm system that is barren at best. The Jays farm system ranks 23rd overall in the league with a single prospect (SP Brett Cecil #56th) ranked in basrball America's Top 100 Prospects.

The new GM Ryan Stewart was introduced to the media today at the Roger's Center in Toronto, the 28 yearold Engineer takes over a team in turmoil. With an aging roster and desolate farm system the new GM is going to have his work cut out for him.

GM Ryan Stewart "We are going to build this club back to respectability from the ground up, it is not going to be a quick fix, there is no 1 piece out there that could turn us into contenders right now. We are going to be dillagent with our drafting and player development in order to setup a pipeline of young talent onto our major league roster. On top of drafting smartly we are going to be very active in Scouting Internationally and will be looking to add pieces to this team at every oppertunity. I don't expect to turn this team around over night but am very excited at the prospect of success in the future"

GM Ryan Stewart will only have a few days to become aquanited with his new staff and team as the Jays kick off the 2009 Season with a 4 game set against the Detroit Tigers on April 5th.
