Japan - Welterweights - Round 1
We have 12 fighters in the Welterweight division. The top 4 seeds, Fujio Ozaki, Yoshinori Takahashi, Tadashi Yuba & Kenji Fukuchi will recieve 1st round byes.
Round 1:
Makoto Watanabe vs Hachiro Ito - Watanabe battered Ito for 15 rounds nearly having him out on several occasions, with both eyes badly swollen at the end. I had it 13-2 Watanabe and Christopher Mund, our ring expert had it 14-1 Watanabe. It was up to the judges however, and they scored it closer, 10-5, 12-3, 11-3.
Shuichi Kobayashi vs Ryu Sorimachi - Both men scored knockdowns, but Sorimachi was the dominant force, landing twice as many punches in his 11-3, 7-7 (was checking with his bookie on the Super Bowl odds!) 11-2 majority decision.
Hiroshi Watanabe vs Jiro Sawada - Watanabe threw the heavier leather, scoring 4 knockdowns. Sawada was the slicker boxer moving well throughout despite being tagged at times. I had it 9-6 Watanabe and Jim Trunzo had it 8-7 for Sawada at the end. The judges scored it 10-5, 8-7, 9-6 for Watanabe!
Osamu Watanabe vs Sakuji Shinozawa - Suprising action between a pair of stylists as both men had moments of furious action. The fight was decided in the 10th when a bad cut on the forehead of Watanabe resulted in a TKO win for Shinozawa. Watanabe was up 5-3, 7-1, 4-4 through 9.
