Tippy Can't Close Out Angels
Thursday, May 12, 1977
Rudy May (3.83 ERA) of the Orioles throws eight innings of shutout baseball but fails to gain a decision as California scores twice in the bottom of the ninth off of closer Tippy Martinez (0-2, 14.21 ERA) and gets a 2-1 victory over Baltimore.
"I did everything I could today." said May while icing his arm after the game. "We needed that win. I know Tippy is struggling, but he needs to get things fixed in a hurry - we can't keep losing games like this."
After giving up consecutive singles to Rusty Torres (.250) and Ron Jackson (.241) to open the inning, Martinez walks Thad Bosley to loaded the bases - then uncorks a wild pitch to tie the game and give Tippy his third blown save. One sacrifice fly by Jerry Remy (10 RBI) later, Baltimore's six-game winning streak comes to an end. Gary Ross (6-1, 3.10 ERA) throws his fifth complete game in seven starts to get the win.

Seattle's Byron McLaughlin (2-3, 3.19 ERA) helps break the Mariners six-game losing streak by holding New York to just one run on two hits through eight innings and gaining a 2-1 victory. Dock Ellis (4-2, 2.38 ERA) goes the distance in the loss, giving up five hits while striking out five.
After Detroit scrambles to tie the game in the eighth inning on a two-run single by Ben Oglivie (.286, 31 RBI), Sal Bando (.239, 3 HR, 9 RBI) hits a game-winning, solo home run off of Vern Ruhle (2-4, 3.96 ERA) in the bottom of the inning to give the Brewers a 4-3 victory. The homer is the third hit for Bando, who also drives in three of Milwaukee's four runs.

Injuries

| CF Cesar Geronimo (.148, 2 HR, 8 RBI) is day-to-day for about 3 days with a damaged meniscus (knee).
Considering Geronimo is in a rotation with George Foster in CF, don't expect him to miss any time. |

| MR Eddie Solomon (0-0, 3.00 ERA) is expected to miss about 8 months with a ruptured tendon in his bicep.
Placed on the 60-day disabled list.
SP Doug Capilla (4-0, 3.56 ERA - AAA) recalled from Triple A New Orleans.
Capilla should fill in nicely considering Solomon only pitched 3 innings so far this year. |
Major Transactions

| C Fran Healey (.600 - AA) contract purchased from Double A Reading.
C Tim Blackwell (.000, 5 AB) optioned to Triple A Oklahoma City.
The trading of Bob Boone to Los Angeles may be a little more far reaching than originally thought. |

Attendance: 2,462 | Single-A scouts were in town checking some of the guys. | This is the kinda stuff I like to see. Outstanding starting pitching from Bill Newton, who gave up four hits and two earned runs while striking out five in 7.2 innings, as well as timely hitting as we seemed to deliver key hits whenever someone was in scoring position. Vernon Lambright (.243, 5 RBI) has two singles and two RBI, Juan Madrigal (.283) has two base hits, and Jesus Rivera (.356, 17 RBI) has a single and a key RBI double.
