Italy - Heavyweights - Round 1
Italy has a rich boxing tradition, providing many good fighters throughout the years. In the Heavyweight division we have 41 fighters. Round 1 will consist of 9 fight in bouts to set the field at 32.
Uber Bacilieri vs Bonino Allevi - Allevi dominated this fight even though there were several great rounds by both fighters. The interesting fact here was that Allevi was losing each of the 3 rounds he scored knockdowns in, or the fight would have been much closer than the 10-4, 11-3, 12-2 result he earned.
Biagio Chianese vs Giancarlo Bacchini - It was obvious throughout that Chianese was the classier fighter in this bout, so it may have been a kindness that it was stopped when Bacchini suffered a bad cut on the bridge of his nose in the 8th round for the TKO on cuts.
Guido Trane vs Gino Buonvino - What started out as a hugging and clinching round 1 ended when Buonvino landed a crushing right cross to end Trane's night at the 1:13 mark!
Fausto Constantino vs Cesare Di Benedetto - Di Benedetto had little trouble with Constantino, dispatching him in the 4th with a hard jab followed by a devastating right cross for the 10 count.
Giancinto Franzolin vs Gianfranco Giannini - Franzolin broke open a very close fight with a crushing uppercut in the 5th round for the KO.
Saverio Grizzo vs Mario Liani - Grizzo wore his man down before scoring a pair of knockdowns in the 7th round. Liani survived that round, but it was obvious that he was still woozy when the 8th started, and Grizzo went straight at him, pouring it on until the referee ended the fight half way through the round for the TKO.
Francesco Piccinali vs Salvatore Ruggirello - Ruggirello survived a 2nd round knockdown to score the KO in the 6th round.
Domenico Scala vs Primo Ubaldo - Scala dominated throughout, punctuating it with a pair of knockdowns, one for a 9 count and the other that would have been 10 if it weren't for the bell in the 15th and final round. The judges scored it 11-3, 9-5, 11-3 as Scala advances.
Guiseppe Sanga vs Angelo Visini - Dull was an understatement in this one as neither Sanga or Visini seemed willing to mix it up. It showed in the score cards as it went 7-6 Sanga, 7-7, 6-6 for the majority draw. Unfortunately we have a rematch next.
Rematch:
Guiseppe Sanga vs Angelo Visini - Visini took control in this one, aided by a cut on the inside of the left eyebrow of Sanga that continuously bled until in the 9th round the referee ended it for the TKO for Visini.
