Ireland - non Heavyweights
I'll be finishing Ireland in this thread.
Light Heavyweights:
Final:
George Gardiner vs Mike McTigue - Despite having his left orb nearly closed, McTigue dominated Gardiner throughout to earn the 10-5, 9-6, 11-4 decision. Both Lee McRae and myself had it 11-4 as there was no doubt who the victor was in this one.
Super Middleweight:
Steve Collins gets the berth and is expected to do well in the World Tourney.
Middleweights:
With 6 warriors in the field, the top 2 seeds will recieve a bye in the Quarter-Finals. They are Jack Dempsey NP and Jack Burke.
Quarter-Finals:
Mike Donovan vs John Seenan - Donovan came out with a crisp combination then a right hook that floored Seenan. Seenan arose at 7, but wasn't able to mount any sort of offense or defense forcing the referee to end things for the 1 TKO!
Andy Lee vs Mick Leahy - Superior boxing skills and a flash knockdown propelled Lee to a 15 round unanimous decision by the score of 7-6, 10-5, 7-4.
Semi-Finals:
Jack Dempsey NP vs Andy Lee - A dominant performance by Dempsey as he used superior skills in every aspect of the game to force Lee's corner to throw in the towel near the end of the 3rd round before their man took serious damage. Call it a 3 TKO.
Jack Burke vs Mike Donovan - Burke was simply the better fighter in this one, landing a right hook in the 14th then finishing strong to win the decision 11-4, 9-6, 8-6.
Final:
Jack Dempsey NP vs Jack Burke - Dempsey used every part of the ring against Burke, making Burke be the agressor, then causing pain every time he waded in with brilliant counter punches. He scored a knockdown in the 15th round then poured it on, with only the bell saving Burke in the end. The judges scored the fight 10-5, 9-6, 10-5 for Dempsey who will fight in the World Tournament.
Jr. Middleweights:
Sean Mannion represents Ireland in the World Tournament on an automatic berth.
Welterweights:
Billy Gardner vs Jimmy Gardner - The punch-stats tell it all in this one as Jimmy Gardner threw nearly 400 more punches while landing 130+ less than Billy Gardner. Add in a pair of knockdowns by Billy and it spelled disaster for Jimmy as the judges scored it 11-4, 8-7, 9-6 for Billy Gardner who heads on to the World Tournament.
Jr. Welterweights:
Mark Riggs is the only entrant thus will be in the world Tourney.
Lightweights:
There are 4 entrants in this weight class.
Semi-Finals:
Willie Fitzgerald vs Tommy Cleary - Fitzgerald was clearly winning the fight, and was close to finishing Cleary in the 13th with a knockdown when he hit Cleary with an elbow and was immediately disqualified!
Jack McAuliffe vs Patsy Sweeney - McAuliffe was the better fighter according to all the pundits, but Sweeney outworked him, out punched him and outsmarted him for a 10-5, 10-5, 11-4 decision.
Final:
Patsy Sweeney vs Tommy Cleary - Cleary was up 2-0, 1-1,1-1 through the first 3 rounds when he landed a followup cross that literally tore the right eyebrow of Sweeney, forcing the end of the fight half way through round 4. With the TKO, the improbable Cleary moves to the world tournament!
Featherweights:
There are 7 featherweights in this competition for the Irish berth. Top seeded Bernard Dunne recieves a bye.
Quarter-Finals:
Dick Hollywood vs Paul Griffin - Hollywood broke over a suprisingly close fight by taking the final 3 rounds. Griffin was considered a warmup fight for bigger things in this tourney for the highly regarded Hollywood. The judges scored it 9-6, 9-6, 10-5 for Hollywood.
Barry McGuigan vs Billy Kid Irwin - McGuigan simply over matched Irwin in every phaze of the game, scoring 7 knockdowns, including 3 in the 13th and final round. Irwin tried valiantly to get up yet again, but finally was unable to beat the count. McGuigan was 12-0, 10-2 (??) 12-0 through the first 12 rounds.
Jimmy Dime vs Dave Sullivan - Dime had little trouble with Sullivan, scoring 2 knockdowns, the final one for the count in the 5th round to move on in the tourney.
Semi-Finals:
Bernard Dunne vs Jimmy Dime - Dime was the agressor, taking it to Dunne though he was less accurate. Dunne landed more shots but did it in bunches, losing more rounds when a right cross opened a huge gash on the forehead of Dime and the fight was stopped for the TKO win. Dime was up 5-4 on all 3 cards when he recieved the loss.
Dick Hollywood vs Barry McGuigan - Great fight between to excellent fighters saw McGuigan down early but getting up to push ahead with a pair of his own knockdowns in the 12th round then taking 2 out of the last 3 rounds to win the 8-7, 7-8, 8-6 split decision.
Final:
Bernard Dunne vs Barry McGuigan - Dunne was the flashier fighter, and it paid off in this one as McGuigan threw the heavier leather in a fight that most pundits felt went for McGuigan. The judges disagreed however as they scored it 7-5, 8-6, 8-6 for Dunne! I had it 8-7, Ian Lord had it 8-6 for McGuigan. Dunne moves on to the World Tournament where he should be a factor.
Bantamweights:
Final:
Johnny Caldwell vs Mike Nolan - After a blistering first round by both men, Caldwell took over, battering Nolan before scoring the KO at 2:58 in the 2nd round! Caldwell earns his way into the World Tourney in spectacular fashion!
Flyweights:
Frank Brierly is the entrant at Flyweight.
