We see clubs giving up on cups all the time; Arsenal hasn't taken the Carling Cup seriously since Wenger took charge and about half of the eligible English teams actively try to get knocked out of the UEFA Cup/Europa League. They do that because they want to be able to field a stronger, more fit team for their more important league matches. How is this any different?
