NEW YORK POST
YANKS 4 ½ GAMES OUT AT THE END OF APRIL
YANKEES IN 9th PLACE
By Jim Dandy- Staff Writer
We are heading into the month of May and the Yankee’s find themselves 9 and ½ games out of first and in ninth place in the AL with a record of 7-10. The Angels have surprised everyone by jumping out to a record of 12-6 leading the league. As we go into May the Yankee bats are starting to wake up. Mickey Mantle took over a week to hit his first homer of the season. He broke out his slump in a big way by blasting two homers against Washington in one game. He is now up to 4 but trailing league leading home run hitter Woodie Held of the Indians. Held was just named the AL Batter for April with a .382 batting average to go along with 7 homers, 18 RBI’s and 20 runs scored.
The one bright spot for the Yanks is the pitching of Whitey Ford. Ford has a 2-1 record and 15 strikeouts. Frank Lary the new kid on the team has a 1-3 record with 18 strikeouts.
Manager Ralph Houk was given the news that Yogi Berra will be out for 3 weeks with a strained finger. His replacement rookie Joe Pepitone called up to fill in for Berra will be out for about 2 weeks. At a practice session he was racing a fellow teammate an suffered a oblique strain. A reporter asked Joe about his injury and Pepitone said “ it is just one of those rookie mistakes” and “I hope to be fit to play soon”
In other news around the league, pitcher Don Mossi of the Tigers was named AL Pitcher of the month of April. So far this season Don has a record of 3-0 and 19 strikeouts an a ERA of 1.10 in 32.2 innings.
Yankee manager Houk when asked about his teams performance so far stated “ It is still early and we still have a lot of baseball still to be played”.
