METS TOP CARDS FOR FIRST NL WIN
MAYS GETS FIRST HOMER FOR METS

The Mets New York’s new entry in the National League took the field today at Sportsman’s Park in St Louis. The Mets had veteran right hander Early Wynn on the mound against Larry Jackson with a crowd of 30,326 on hand.
The Mets started off the scoring early in the first inning. Left fielder Marty Keough singled and was driven home on a single by catcher Del Crandall to take a 1-0 lead.
The Mets scored again in the fourth inning . Gene Woodling singled and came home on a Joe Knapp single. Then Willie Mays drove home Knapp with his first Met home run to left. Now 3-0 Mets.
In the fifth inning Keough doubled and came home on a double by Crandall. Now the mets had a 5-0 lead.
The Mets scored again in the sixth, Knapp singled and came home on a single by second baseman Chuck Hiller. Going into the bottom of the sixth the Mets had a commanding 6-0 lead.
But the Cards came out hitting in the home half of the inning. Jackie Brandt drew a walk off Wynn and that was followed by a Joe Cunningham single. Ken Boyer then tripled to left center scoring Brandt and the Cards were finally on the board.
Then in the bottom of the seventh inning Gene Oliver, Daryl Sspencer and Julian Javier all singled and with the sacks full Snaffernoth drew a walk to force in Oliver. Jackie Brandt then lifted a sac fly to left scoring Spencer.when the inning ended the Cards only trailed 6-3.
In the eighth inning the Mets came roaring back.Chico Fernandez the Mets short stop doubled and Curt Flood drew a walk. Keough singled in Fernandez and Flood scored on a wild pitch by relief pitcher Ray Washburn. The score is now 8 to 3 in favor of the Mets.
Now in the Cards half of the inning Gene Oliver hit a solo home run off Wynn to bring the Cards closer at 8-4.
Now in the bottom of the ninth with Dick Hall pitching in relief of Wynn, Mc Clendon singles and Boyer drives him home with a three bagger. Gene Oliver followed with another solo home run.
Stengel brought in in closer Luis Arroyo and he ends the Cards threat and the Mets gain their first victory of the season and the first in team history. Now New Yorker’s cannot wait till next week for the Mets home opener at the Polo Grounds.
