April 10, 1962
It was opening day for the 1962 season and the defending champion Yankee’s took on the Baltimore Orioles with lefty Whitey "The Chairman of the Board" Ford taking on the ace of the Baltimore staff Chuck Estrada. Ford coming off an injury that side lined him most of the 1961 season pitched seven innings and recorded seven strike outs and got a no decision in his appearance.
The Yankees’ started the scoring in the second inning when catcher Elston Howard hit a line drive homer off Estrada. In the top of the third Orioles left fielder Earl Robinson doubled and was driven home on a single by Baltimore’s first baseman Jim Gentile. Then in the top of the sixth inning Don Lock reached base on an error by Yankees short stop Tony Kubek and came home on a double by second baseman Tom Wright making the score 2-1 Baltimore.
In the top of the seventh, Robinson singled and reached second on a sac bunt by Don Jenkins. Robinson then took third on a wild pitch by Ford and then scored on a Howard passed ball making the score now 3-1 in favor of the Birds. In the bottom half of the eighth Bobby Richardson reached first on an error by second baseman Ron Hansen who pinch hit for Wright. Tony Kubek then singled to right scoring Richardson now the score was 3-2 Baltimore.
In the bottom of the ninth Houk sent rookie Tom Tresh up to pinch hit for Clete Boyer and the switch hitting infielder took a Hoyt Wilhelm pitch into the right field porch ti tie up the game.
Then the top of the tenth Gentile took a Ryne Duren fastball intothe upper deck in right to give the O’s the lead. The Yankee’s came back in the bottom of the tenth Mickey Mantle doubled to right and came home on a Moose Skowron double to left to tie up the game.
Now the drama unfolds. Tresh making his second plate appearance in the game took Wilhelm deep again to right with a walk off home run to win the game for the Yankee’s.
Relief pitcher Ryne Duren picked up the win and Wilhelm was tagged with the loss. The Yanks have the next couple of days off and travel to Detroit to take on the Tigers in a three game series starting on the 13th.
