Ruthlandian Union 2005 Final 4 Series

Ranford Beats Belair Beach 4-1, Heads to Final 4
Chris Bernhoffer led Ranford to a 4-1 triumph over Belair Beach at Bayside Park to capture the Elite 8 Series in five games, advancing the Bulls to the Pro Cup Final 4 against Middlefield.

Bernhoffer (2-0 1.38) was superb, stopping the Sunbirds on just three hits, while fanning six and issuing only one base on balls. CF Warren Gravois (.364) slammed a bases-loaded double in the third inning to send the Bulls to a 2-0 lead. That gave Gravois 9 RBIs for the playoffs. 3B Colin Fairclough (.323) also had an RBI ground-out in the inning and made it 3-0. In the fourth frame Ranford tacked on another score when RF Sherman Waters (.267) doubled, stole third and came in on C Walt Horvath (.258) ground-out to first base. It remained 4-0 until the ninth when a double by pitcher Lanyon Yarbrough (.500) and a single by RF Matty McDermott (.167) put runners on first and third. Yarbrough then scored on CF Billy Martz's (.263) sacrifice fly.

In a losing effort Ray Watson (1-1 2.14) started for Belair Beach and worked eight innings, yielding four runs and seven hits. Watson had 9 strikeouts and walked none.

Ranford, which won the RU North pennant, will oppose the Middlefield Roosters in the RU Final 4. The winner will advance to the Pro Cup Finals. The Roosters finished second to TU West champion, the Volusia Vigilantes, in the regular campaign.

Tycobbian Union 2005 Final 4 Series

Sunsets Rally, Whip Hurricanes in Elite 8 Finale
Summerland came in second to Cape Coral in the TU South in the regular season, but gained revenge in the postseason by rallying in the late innings to take a 5-3 decision in game five of the Elite 8 Series. The big blow of the game was a three-run clout by RF Nickie Troxell (.269) in the top of the eighth.

Hurricane starter Jeff Salow shut them out 2-0 for the first five innings, but the Sunsets came back with the help of home runs by 1B Karl Van Kooten (.289) and C Glen Tracy (.226) to tie the score at 2-2 after seven innings. Alex Alessi (2-1 4.24) hurled a complete-game victory, stopping Cape Coral on five hits, while striking out seven and giving up one walk. Salow (0-1 4.09) was the loser as he allowed four runs and nine hits in seven and one-third innings.

Summerland had the edge in hits 11-5 with Tracy getting three of them and Troxell two. C Fats Dalton (.200) paced the Hurricanes with a two-run homer.

The Sunsets will now head to the TU Final 4 and take on the powerful Denton City Redbirds for the right to advance to the Pro Cup championship. It will be a best-of-five series. Denton City won 98 games in the regular season and ran away with the TU West title, winning by 10 games over runner-up Bay St. Clair. Summerland finished two games behind Cape Coral in the TU South.
