England - Lightweight - Round 1
Round 1:
Dave Charnley vs James Curran - Curran put forth his best effort, but was outgunned as Charnley scored 4 knockdowns enroute to a 13th round KO. The judges all had it 8-4 through 12.
Johnny Summers vs Harry Kimberley - Summers battered Kimberley in the first 2 rounds, causing the referee to end things towards the end of the 2nd round when Kimberley showed no signs of being able to defend himself.
Stanton Abbott vs Sid Stagg - Abbott took all 6 rounds with ease, wearing the woefully outclassed Stagg down. Then in the 7th, he scored the KO win.
Maurice Cullen vs Dave Wallace - Cullen used superior footwork and hand speed to outclass Wallace throughout his 11-4, 9-3, 11-3 decision.
Graham Earl vs William Faucett - Earl scored the lone knockdown then kept on top of the tentative Faucett throughout to earn the 12-3, 11-4, 11-4 decision.
Arthur Chambers vs Sailor Bourne - Chambers was out boxing Bourne throughout, but the fouls caught up with him as he was disqualified for blatant kidney punches in the 13th. Chambers blew an 8-3, 7-4, 7-4 edge.
Colin Dunne vs Dick Burge - Dunne overcame 3 knockdowns and some serious damage from Burge to score a KO in the 10th round.
Austin Gibbons vs Ray Corbett - Gibbons was knocked down in the 3rd, then came on strong, scoring a pair of knockdowns of his own in this knockdown-drag out fight. In the end it was Gibbons getting the TKO win in the 14th as the referee felt that Corbett was unfit to continue. Gibbons was ahead 7-6, 8-5, 8-5 through 13.
Jack Goldswain vs Harry Mansfield - Goldswain had the edge in every skill set as he boxed the ears off of Mansfield in this one, earning the 13-2, 13-2, 13-2 decision.
Bat Mullins vs Michael Ayers - Ayers cut the ring off all night to get to Mullins for a pair of knockdowns enroute to a 10-4, 9-5, 10-4 decision.
Billy Schwer vs Eric Boon - Both Schwer and Boon stood toe to toe for most of this entertaining slugfest that saw Boon down 4 times, the final one for the KO in round 9. The crowd warmly cheered both victor and loser for their efforts.
David Burke vs Gary Hibbert - Burke scored the lone knockdown in this stinker of a fight that went to the judges. They scored it 9-4 Burke, 6-6 and 6-6 for the majority draw. Rematch soon.
Jem Carney vs Steve Murray - Murray went down 2 times, Carney's face was a bloody pulp, and the fans were screaming with glee over this slugfest! It ended up going to the judges, who scored the bout 8-7 Murray, 8-7 Carney, 8-7 Carney for the split decision win. I had it 8-7 for Murray, but it really could have gone either way!
Billy Edwards vs Charles Norton - Both men gave their all in this one, but it was ended when a cut was burst open on Norton's forehead in the11th round for the TKO.
Lee Meager vs Billy Thompson - Both men went down during this one, but Thompson was by far the stronger in this one, taking the 11-4, 12-3, 11-4 decision.
Bobby Vanzie vs Jabez White - Vanzie survived 4 knockdowns, including 3 in the 14th round as he held off the hard charging White. The fight went to the judges who scored it 8-6, 8-6, 9-6 in favor of Vanzie who had built up a solid lead.
Rematch:
David Burke vs Gary Hibbert - Burke wasn't particularly impressive, but against Hibbert it didn't matter, as he had no inspiration or interest in actually fighting. The judges scored the fight 9-4, 11-4, 10-4 for Burke.
