Ruthlandian Union South Division
Sharp Too Sharp for Valka, San Dimas Wins Playoff
It's been an up-and-down season for Bill Sharp of the San Dimas Rancheros. The 23-year-old right-hander has been good at times and struggled at times. Today on the road at Cybertel Park in Valka he was razor-sharp as he hurled the Rancheros past the Blackhawks 4-1. The victory gave San Dimas second place in the RU South and the right to play in the postseason playoffs that begins tomorrow. Sharp (12-13 3.73) went into the seventh inning and allowed only one run and six hits. Cleve Skinner (8-7 2.89) came on in relief and held Valka hitless over the final two and one-third innings for his 22nd save.

Manager Paco Banderos got key hits from 2B Cyclone Cobb (.295) and 1B Johnny Carducci (.305), who both batted in two runs each. The Rancheros outhit the Blackhawks 11-6 and gave the loss to starter Bobby Karu (15-17 2.65), who permitted three runs and eight hits in his seven innings.

San Dimas will open its Sweet 16 postseason series tomorrow afternoon at home at Ranchero Stadium, opposed by the Ranford Bulls, who won the TU North this year by one game. It will be a best-of-five series. Ranford is managed by the wily old Page Satcher.

Gilchrist Stop Colfax, Roosters Win Playoff 4-1
The Middlefield Roosters are in the Pro Cup playoffs. Rookie Jamie Gilchrist pitched the most important game of his young career, stopping Colfax 4-1 to win a one-game playoff for second place in the Ruthlandian West and the postseason position that comes with it. Gilchrist (7-3 2.07) didn't give up an earned run and limited the Blasters to six hits in a complete-game victory at Mountain View Stadium in Colfax.

The Roosters took the lead in the top of the first frame when 2B Timmy Gage (.265) remained alive on a two-base error by 1B Dennis Cole, moved over to third on a ground-out and was driven in by RF Bailey Norcross' (.290) base hit. Middlefield got another run in the fourth inning on C Mike Kanjorsky's (.282) RBI single. Colfax cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth when SS Earl Reeves botched a grounder and allowed 3B Neely Keeton (.283) to score from third. Keeton has led off the inning with a single, was sacrificed to second and advanced to third on ground-out. The Roosters added a run in the sixth when CF Ty DeWitt (.263) singled to begin the inning, went to second on a 6-3 ground-out, tagged up and advanced to third on a deep fly to center, then was plated by 1B Allie Ludlow's (.268) RBI single. Middlefield got the final run on 2B Timmy Gage's four-bagger.

Harry Manning (18-13 3.58) was the losing pitcher. He was hit hard and struggled with his control, surrendering four runs - three earned - in six and one-third innings. Manning walked three and struck out four. The Roosters outhit the Blasters 9-6 in the game. Norcross topped Middlefield with three hits in five tries with help from DeWitt and Ludlow, who had a pair of hits apiece.

Smitty Michaels' Roosters will now go up against the champions of the RU East, the Sugar Valley Rattlers, who are managed by Gibson Bobkins. Middlefield will host the first two games at Middlefield Park in the best-of-five Sweet 16 Series.
