Recap A through C
I'll not go through each country as that would take too much space. Instead I'll focus on the suprises...
Argentina:
Alberto Santiago Lovell scored 4 straight knockouts to win the Heavyweight Division. He took out well known fighters such as Luis Firpo, Cesar Brion and Gregorio Peralta. The real shocker was Pedro Lovell defeating the top seeded Oscar Bonavena by disqualification!
Marcelo Dominguez was by far the favorite to win the Cruiserweight Division. He threw his chance away in the final by being disqualified, sending Victor Emilio Ramirez to the tourney in his stead.
In what for me personally is the biggest shocker of the entire tournament so far, the great Carlos Monzon was eliminated in his fight against Miguel Angel Arroyo. Arroyo also upset the heavily favored Jorge Castro by TKO before losing in the finals to Victor Zalazar, who was only the 5th rated Middleweight in the country.
In the welterweight division Carlos Baldomir was expected to win, but he lost a decision to Juan Carlos Ceferino Villarreal who wasn't expected to be any sort of a factor. Cirilo Gil ended up winning the berth.
In the Jr. Welterweight Division Juan Martin Coggi, the 3rd seed, upset the favorite Nicolino Locche to advance.
Luis Federico Thompson was the odds on favorite to win the Lightweight Division, and Justo Suarez was considered a dark horse. Suarez fought the favored Carlos Aro not once but 2 times (draw, split decision) to make the finals against Thompson who then threw it all away with a blatant foul.
Australia:
The Middleweight Division was full of suprises as top rated Les Darcy fell to a huge underdog in Jim Hall in the semi-finals. The other highly rated Middleweight, Dave Sands dropped a decision to a mid level fighter named Sam Soliman. Soliman ended up earning a TKO in the 12th, but considering the level of competition in the middleweight division, it must be considered a shocker!
I don't normally show TB ratings in my blurbs, but this one's a must. Jimmy Carruthers was the odds on favorite to win the Bantamweight Division with his rating of 10. He was defeated by TKO against Joe Russell, only rated 2! Another simply huge upset! Elley Bennett ended up winning this weight class.
Belgium:
Karel Sys was expected to breeze to the tourney in the Heavyweight Division. Someone forgot to tell little known Pierre Charles however as he defeated Sys by TKO in the 14th.
Cyrille Delannoit was off the boards in Vegas as there was noone expected to give him any competition for the Middleweight berth. He threw that away with a foul in the 10th against the unknown Leon Fouquet.
Canada:
George Chuvalo won the Heavyweight Division as expected, but there was one MAJOR upset of note when Raymond Olubowale (who?.... ) earned the unanimous decision over highly rated Trevor Berbick.
Cuba:
Florentino Fernandez was fully expected to be the Lightweight entrant for Cuba. Emory Cabana, a decent fighter had other plans as he took Fernandez the full 15 rounds in winning the decision.
I fully expect more upsets as the tournament continues. We've had plenty to get things started!
