IPA Owners Split Evenly On New Playoff Proposal.
The only agreement the IPA owners have about the new Pro Cup Series playoff proposal is that they don't agree. A poll by The Islandian Times showed that it is pretty much split right down the middle with the better teams favoring only 16 playoff teams and changing the short three-game series with longer five-game series, while the weaker clubs want to keep the playoff series as it is with 32 teams.
The Times also polled the fans to see how they stand on the new IPA Pro Cup playoff system. They overwhelmingly approved the new system saying under-.500 teams don't deserve to make the playoffs and that competition would be better without them. 16 teams would insure that only deserving teams would qualify for the playoffs. Extending the series to best-of-five would be more fair to teams that won the most games in the regular series. The fans said it was too easy for a lesser team win a three-game series. It would happen less if they were extended to at five-game sets.
The Times spoke with IPA Commissioner John Banford and he said he was looking at the new proposal, talking to all of the owners and trying to take the pulse of the fans before he makes his ruling. Banford said he would have his decision in a few days before the regular season begins.
The Commissioner has absolute power related to league rules and operation. The owners only have advisory powers.
