League Issues 2-Game Suspensions for Brawl
Both New York (N) and Florida held press conferences today and announced that several players involved in yesterday's free-for-all at Citi Field have been suspended for 2 games by the league office. The clubs told BNN that the Mets Jeremy Reed and the Marlins Taylor Tankersley will begin serving the suspensions today.
Sheffield Raps 500th Roundtripper
Gary Sheffield hit a historic home run today -- career blast number 500. "I am happy to be in such elite company. It has been quite a ride so far," Sheffield said after the game.The Mets left fielder went 2 for 3 with 1 home run and 1 run batted in as the New York (N) Mets won 11-6 over the Florida Marlins. Lifetime Sheffield is hitting .292 with 454 doubles, 25 triples, 500 home runs, 1634 RBIs and 1596 runs scored. He has appeared in 2481 games to date and delivered 2617 hits.
Padres Martinez Suffers Injury
After injuring himself, Padres starting pitcher Pedro Martinez headed straight to the hospital. He was removed from the game as a precaution after throwing a pitch and the team's worst fears were confirmed when it turned out to be a little more serious. Martinez will miss at least 4-5 months with a torn upper back muscle.
