Evaluating a player
Hey guys,
I'm an OOTP noob, and I'm having some problems figuring out what to do with a player. He can really rake, but is a serious liability in the field. Its an online league that started in 1871 with 8 teams. I drafted Frank McCarton as a CF in the 1871 draft and played him in various spots in the outfield in his first year. He ended up with 11 errors in 13 games, and a .686 fielding percentage. In 1872 he had 56 errors in 38 games, mostly in LF. His stats fielding attributes are per my scout:
Outfield:
range: 12
error: 5
arm: 7
LF: 3
CF: 5
RF: 4
Now I have two really good players in center and right, so I don't really want to change that, but I need hitting, and Frank can do that. He is also only 18. I've read somewhere, that a player has to have certain attributes to improve their skill at a certain position. And I think I read somewhere else that 1B requires the least amount of skill to learn. So my question is, Should I keep playing McCarton is playing out of position in LF, try him at 1B, or just put him on the bench to pinch hit? His infield ratings are worse than the outfield ones. Note, I really need hitting in my lineup. I also see that errors are more prominent in the 1870's. I'd still like to hear input from you guys though.
