Nats Make Fernandez #1
Washington Selects Pitcher With First Overall Pick
WASHINGTON, DC -- With the first overall selection in the 2009 MLB first-year player draft the Washington Nationals selected starting pitcher Carlos Fernandez. Fernandez is a high schooler out of Galt, California and hopes to have a promising career. He already has developed 4 pitches, a fastball, sinker, changeup and forkball.
"We were happy to upgrade our pitching," said Washington GM Pat Gillick. "It may sometimes be a risky move to draft a pitcher straight out of high school, but we think his talent speaks for itself."
The rest of the top 10 unfolded like this; LF Nick Penick (SEA), SP John Evarts (SDG), C Gilbert Lavoie (PIT), SS Tomas Guerrero (BAL), CF Todd Graham (SFO), C John Fall (COL), 1B Ricardo Martinez (DET), 2B Julio Valdez (CIN) and LF Keun-ho Kim (KAN).
With the last pick in the draft the Los Angeles Angels took middle reliever Felipe Martinez out of Cuba.
