Ruthlandian North Division Sweet 16 Series - Game Three
Valmara Overwhelms FM 11-4, Advances to Elite 8
The big bats of the Valmara Vipers came alive today just when they needed them. The Vipers belted 11 hits with six doubles among them to rout the Far Mountain Redhawks 11-4 in the decisive game three of the RU North Sweet 16 playoffs. The Redhawks are now gone from the playoffs and Valmara will advance to the Elite 8. Spearheading the Viper win were a bevy of batters with CF Jan Szymanski (.273) leading the charge with three RBIs and a trio with two RBIs each that included LF Jet Kazmarek (.364), 1B Masaichi Okawa (.304) and 3B Zoran Belakov (.174). Far Mountain couldn't compete with them today. Redhawk RF Karl Dietz (.211) got the only homer in the game, but it didn't matter to the Vipers. They ran up a 5-1 lead after three innings and increased it to 9-3 in the sixth. Winning pitcher Zoran Zalewski (2-0 4.32), revved up by such huge bat support, cruised through for the win. He allowed four runs and seven hits and worked into the ninth before being lifted for Eddie Dorn, who got the final three outs. Dependable Sonny Elliott, a 19-game winner during the regular season, didn't have it today as the Vipers tagged him for five runs and six hits in less than three innings for the loss.
Valmara will tangle with the Elnora All-Stars tomorrow in Elnora. Valmara will open on the road, but will have the home field advantage if the Elite 8 series should go to three games.
