Ruthlandian Union South Division Sweet 16 Series - Game Two
Sunbirds Slip By St. John 2-1, Tie Series On Swift Homers
In a pressure-packed game at Cathedral Stadium in St. John, the visiting Belair Beach Sunbirds slipped by the hometown Crusaders 2-1 in ten innings behind some outstanding mound work by Tiny Lindgren and Ray Watson and two homers by Nicky Swift. The win tied the RU South Sweet 16 Series at one game each and set the stage for rubber match tomorrow afternoon. The 5'6" Lindgren hurled a magnificent game holding St. John to just three hits and one run in eight innings. The 20-year-old righthander walked none and fanned three, departing for a pinchhitter in the top of the ninth. Swift (.353) slammed a solo homer in the first and the game-winner in the tenth to account for both Sunbird scores. Watson (1-0 3.86) gained the victory with two perfect innings, totally shutting down the Crusaders in the ninth and tenth frames. St. John's only run came in the fifth on a single by C Stan Pichon. Sterling Eccles (0-0 3.14) started for the Crusaders and held Belair Beach in check on one run and seven hits in his eight and one-thirds innings. Eccles walked two and struck out eight in an impressive outing. He tired in the ninth and was relieved by Eddie Thorsen after issuing a walk. With the winning run on second via a sacrifice bunt and one out, Thorsen retired the side by striking out two batters. Thorsen (1-1 3.86) suffered the loss after giving up Swift's home run. The Sunbirds outhit the Crusaders 9-3.
