Tycobbian Union North Division Sweet 16 Series - Game One
Oxford Stops Luxora, Phillips Winner 4-2
23-game winner Dan Phillips, a 25-year-old righthander for the Oxford Red Caps, was too tough for the Luxora Zorros in the opening game of the IPA Sweet 16 series. Phillips (1-0 1.23) stopped the Z's on four hits and two runs in seven and one-third innings. Phillips fanned seven, while walking none. But a rain delay got rid of him. Emerson Carnell (1-0 0.00) came in from the bullpen and blanked Loxora over the final one and two-thirds innings. Oxford took an early lead 4-1 after four innings, led at the plate by 2B Richie Vla (.313) and CF Ike Plunkett (.200), both with two hits, a run scored and an RBI. RF Dante Vander Meer (.467) also had a pair of hits and two RBIs. The Zorros were limited to six hits with CF Lacey Tompkins (.118) and Joel Reed (.375) getting two hits apiece. Losing pitcher Marco Braceros (1-1 2.84) started, but lasted only into the fourth, giving up four runs and seven hits.
The second game of the series will be played in Oxford tomorrow at Winchester Park.
