Ruthlandian Union North Division Sweet 16 Series - Game One
FM Whips Valmara 5-2 in Series Opener
Alex Groveland got a strong outing from Doc Rutledge in the 5-2 Far Mountain victory over favored Valmara in the Sweet 16 opener at Sky High Stadium. Rutledge pitched a masterful game holding the hard-hitting Vipers to two runs and seven hits in eight innings. Rutledge fanned four and issued two walks. Closer Bud Ford (0-0 4.50) nailed down the win with a perfect ninth and got his second save in the playoffs. Leading the Redhawk 10-hit attack were C Dave Davis (.667) with three hits, 3B Shirai Kobayashi (.667) with two hits and two RBIs and 2B Steve Kaminski (.545) with two hits and an RBI. Far Mountain led 2-0 after six, Valmara cut it to 2-1 in the seventh, then the Redhawks put them away with a three-run eighth. Viper CF Jan Szymanski (.267) had the only homer in the game in the ninth. Valmara starter Andre Trepanier (0-2 3.27) pitched a solid game allowing only two runs, one earned, in his seven innings.
Game two will be played tomorrow afternoon in Valmara at War Memorial Stadum.
