Bayview Bumps Bucs Out of Playoffs 7-4
The Bayview Vikings used two-run homers by CF Phil Kanaan and LF Bryan Wessels and solid pitching by Jerry Harrison to bump the Bay St. Clair Buccaneers out of the playoffs. The Vikings belted the Bucs 7-4 to win the series two-games-to-one. Jerry Harrison went the distance, striking out 10, giving up four runs and nine hits for the crucial win. The hits were all even for both clubs with Kanaan, 2B Alan Hansen and 3B James Scott sparking the Viks with two hits apiece. C Jake Singleton had three hits for the Buccaneers. Freddy Banecker caught the loss as he was touched for both homers and six runs in five-plus innings. Bayview ran up a 7-1 lead after six innings, then held off the Bucs over the final three innings.
Redbirds Roll Over Reds 6-3, Move Up to Sweet 16
Third-seeded Denton City rolled over the number-two seed Rolling Hills Reds 6-3 in 10 innings to capture the series two-games-to-one and move up to the IPA Sweet 16. Redbird 1B Rod MacCormack singled in the winning run in the 10th off losing pitcher Hoyt Petersen. Denton City added two more runs in the inning on a bases-loaded walk to 3B Jay Petit and an RBI single by Cris Willis. Both clubs got good pitching from their starters. Redbird winner Joe Hoffman and Reds Hondo Anoki both worked nine innings, allowed 10 hits and three runs. Reliever Arnie Courtney retired the side in order to save the game for Hoffman. Denton City laced 14 hits and were led by MacCormack with 4-for-5, two runs scored and two RBIs. Petit chipped in three hits and two runs batted in. MacCormack put the Redbirds in the lead in the first frame with a single. Rolling Hills had 10 hits with 3B Big Jake Minninewah giving the Reds a 2-1 lead in the second with a two-run blast. 1B Eddy Dowler drove in their other run with a single in the third frame, making the score 3-1. Petit's single cut it to 3-2 in the fourth and LF Cliff Land tied it up in the eighth with an RBI single.
Tomorrow afternoon at Douglas Denton Field, the Redbirds will entertain the top-seeded and powerful Bayview Vikings, the regular season champs in the TU West. Games two and three, if necessary, will be at Downtown Plaza Stadium in Bayview.
