2003 IPA Pro Cup Series

Ruthlandian Union North Division - First Round Series - Third Game

Valmara Bumps A's Out of Playoffs, Zalewski Winner
Manager J. Samuel Jackson made the right choice today at War Memorial Stadium in Valmara - he chose his aging 36-year-old veteran Zarek Zalewski as his starter in the game three finale of the RU North playoffs and got a solid performance in the 6-4 triumph over the Glasco Athletics. Zalewski pitched a strong eight innings holding Glasco to just two runs. The Athletics got to him in the ninth for a couple of runs, but the Vipers prevailed and will now advance to the IPA Sweet 16 against the Far Mountain Redhawks. Closer Yanni Wlodarczyk came in with the score 6-3 and managed to escape with the save, although under great distress. After giving up a walk and a double and another run, cutting the lead to 6-4, he finally nailed the win with the tying runs on second and third. Zalewski got the win, permitted four runs and eight hits in his eight and two-thirds innings with seven Ks and one walk. Valmara went ahead 3-0 in the first, Glasco tallied two in the third to cut it to 3-2. The Vipers added two more in the sixth and went up 6-2. Leading the Valmara attack were 3B Zoran Belikov with a homer and two RBIs, C Yoshi Motsuzuki with two hits and one run scored and SS Steve Androwski with 2-3, an RBI and a run scored. Glasco's ace Jesse Balfour took the loss, allowing five runs and eight hits in five innings. RF Ox Beauvais knocked in a pair of scores with a third-inning double to lead the A's.
