2003 IPA Pro Cup Series

Ruthlandian Union South Division - First Round Series - Second Game

STJ Advances, Crusaders Sweep Valka 5-3
Top-seeded St. John trailed in the early going 3-0, but rallied to beat the fourth-seeded Valka Blackhawks 5-3 to sweep the RU North playoff series and advance to the Sweet 16. 1B Frankie Faber triple in a run in the fourth inning and ripped a solo homer in the sixth to put the Crusaders in the lead 4-3. Zach Simon hurled a solid game for the win, working eight innings, giving up three runs on five hits with four walks and six strikeouts. Closer Eddie Thorsen did his job with a runless ninth inning for the save. Andrei Kokk went the distance for Valka, surrendered five runs on nine hits with six Ks. LF Don Kolstad got St. John back in the game with a sac fly in the fourth frame and an insurance run in the eighth with a triple. CF Ron Landauer, SS Villem Kask and C Kristjan Kasik drove in the runs for Valka.

St. John won yesterday 7-6. With the sweep of the two games the Crusaders wrapped up the first round series and now head to the Sweet 16 and the winner of Belair Beach and Waleska.

Burkhalter HR Knots Series, Sinks Sunbirds 5-1
Waleska LF Big Hoss Burkhalter belted a three-run shot off a tired Tiny Lindgren to sink the Belair Beach Sunbirds 5-1 and knot the series at one game apiece, setting the stage for a decisive third game tomorrow at Bayside Park. Burkhalter's homer came in the top of the ninth to send the Westerners ahead 4-1. C Paul Schultz added an RBI double a few batters later. Jack Wagner went all the way for the victory. He gave up 10 hits, fanned seven and walked nobody in a fine performance. The 25-year-old twirler bent, but didn't break. Lindgren allowed only six hits in defeat with six strikeouts and two walks. He gave up five all runs.

Belair Beach won the opener 5-3 yesterday in Waleska.
