1889 End of August: National League & American Association

The Pittsburg Alleghenys are surging and the New York Giants are sinking faster than rocks in a lake right now. Pittsburg went 23-8 in August to go from 9.5 games back in 3rd place to now leading by 2.5 games. Their pitcher Milo Lockwood has been superb and is leading all 3 triple crown catergories for pitchers (ERA, WINS, K's). Meanwhile, the Giants suffered through a 5 game losing streak and a 7 game streak that saw them lose 2 straight back-to-back to doubleheaders against Philadelphia. Perhaps though, the pennant race will be decided at the beginning of September as Pittsburg and New York meet for a 4 game series in 3 days with the first day being a doubleheader.

8/15: Cleveland C Wilbert Robinson saw his promising career come to an end today. The 26-year old stumbled rounding the bases and immediately knew he was hurt. The diagnosis was awful, he had torn both of his ACL's. For his career, he batted .282 with 5 HR and 282 RBI including that memorable 6 hit cycle game just months ago.

8/29: Pittsburg trades 25-year old C Doggie Miller to Indianapolis for 25-year old P Charlie Getzein (21 G, 3.07 ERA).

Going into the final month or so of the season, the Association is still a 3 team race with Baltimore asserting itself as the front runner now. The Orioles have the most experience in this position by far, as they have won 5 straight pennants. As for the other 2 teams, Cincinnati can slug it out with the best of teams and Louisville can limit any team with their duo of Knight and Bradley.
