The Stanley Cup runners-up from the past two years, the New York Islanders, is looking to make another run for that elusive Stanley Cup. They will be the 1-seed in the East, and will face the two-time Stanley Cup winning Carolina Hurricanes. Last year's Stanley Cup champions, the Anaheim Ducks, will be the 2-seed in the West, and they will face the Calgary Flames in the first round.

The Montreal Canadiens are making their return to the playoffs after a 7-year absence. They will face their in-country rival Ottawa Senators in the first round.
