1888 End of September: National League & American Association

The club from Washington has seen their once 10.5 game lead shrink down to 2.5 games with 2 weeks to play in the season. Now to New York and Mike Tiernan's once promising triple crown feat. Well, that looks all but dead now because his teammate Dave Orr seems to be driving in all the runs on the team. As for the pennant race, the schedule seems to favor the Nationals very much as they play out their remaining game all at home while the Alleghenys play out the rest of their season on the road including a 3 game trip to Washington from Oct 3-5.

Various News & Notes
9/4: New York P Harry Salisbury made history today at the Polo Grounds as he picked up his 300th win of his career. The 33-year old had his best season with Cleveland in 1884 when he went 45-11 in 57 games and posted a all-time low ERA of 1.16. He also won the Cartwright Award that year, given to the best pitcher.
9/10: Less than a week after picking up a milestone victory, New York P Harry Salisbury had a career game with his bat. That's right, Salisbury went 5-6 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI in a 16-5 victory over Indianapolis. He also picked up the win.
9/11: Pittsburg C Jack Rowe goes hitless ending his streak at 20 games.
9/19: New York RF Mike Dorgan has 5 hits in 6 trips to the plate in a 7-5 victory over Pittsburg in 12 innings.

From start to finish will the be story for the Baltimore Orioles as they have destroyed their opponents all year long behind timely hitting and superb pitching. This will be the Orioles 5th pennant in 5 years and 6th total in the 7 year history of the league. Even with all those pennants, they have only won it all once, in 1885 when they triumphed over the Chicago White Stockings of the NL. It may be tough for them to win it all this year as late in the year they lost one of their best offensive threats in Harry Moore to an apparent eye injury.
