The voice of my life has been silenced. He was Phillies baseball on the radio for me. In fact, he was one of the people that inspired me to go into broadcasting in the first place.
A few years ago when I was working with a Missouri radio station I was at the ballpark interviewing players. I decided to go drop my stuff off in the press box and then go back down to field level. I went in and noticed the door to the visiting broadcast booth was open and there sat Harry. He was alone going through notes for the game. I stopped in and introduced myself and asked if I could interview him. He just laughed and asked why anyone would want to listen to him. He said he wanted to have a smoke and told me to come with him.
An hour later we ended up back in the press box but not until he regaled me with stories of Richie Ashburn and the 1980 World Series and some of the more colorful guys to come through the organization. It was one of the best afternoons of my life.
I've been listening to Kalas clips on YouTube this afternoon and tears are running down my face. I feel like I've lost a friend. I can't believe I won't hear him call another game.
