There were only two upsets in the Conference Quarterfinals. In the Eastern Conference, the 86-win Quebec Nordiques defeated the 101-win Washington Capitals. And the 89-win Carolina Hurricanes defeated the 97-win Pittsburgh Penguins. The Western Conference went according to form.

The Eastern Conference Semifinals:
5) Carolina Hurricanes vs. 1) Boston Bruins
6) Quebec Nordiques vs. 2) Florida Panthers

The Western Conference Semifinals:
4) St. Louis Blues vs. 1) Columbus Blue Jackets
3) Los Angeles Kings vs. 2) Winnipeg Jets
