1. Most people use a 3 year recalc so you should see Kerry Wood's stats fall. However i beleive that if a player sits out a year and has no stats for one of the years that the game is using for recalculations then the player development takes over.
Something you might want to watch because it can lead to wacky stats for that player. I've seen several pitchers whove had breaks in their career go from 75 k's to 300 while everyone else remains the same. You could probably add a statline in the database so he has stats for that year or manually retire and later unretire him. I dont know of the fastest way to know which players had breaks in careers as that would probably keep your historical league more accurate.

2. I dont think players like Taylor are in the database so they wouldnt be in the game. If he didnt pitch a regular season game then he has no stats and shouldnt be in the lahman database that the game uses.

3. Well the game is gonna calculate ratings based on your league setup. You may hear a lot of people say the game doesnt recognize names. Yes thats true but it does recognize stats. So you shouldnt see Ozzie Smith turning into Babe Ruth because he didnt have the real life stats to match Babe Ruth. So Bush would import and improve based on his real stats. However with recalc off there is a better chance his career might be more different

4. Depends on if you are using base ratings on career totals, peak totals, or rest of career. The game knows Piazza's stats where in real life we didnt know what kind of player he would become. Yeah it may make him a higher pick but would you rather have the AI not recognize his potential and you be able to steal him in a later round in the draft/ To me that would handcuff the AI's drafting and make it too easy for you to get the best players. Look at this way if Piazza's rookie draft were tomorrow do you really think he would be a low pick?

I would plan out how you want to play. Do you want to start at the very begining in 1871, or 1900, or say 1960. Think about how you will expand your league. Setup your league and always make a backup. Then run tests with different settings and see what you like. If you play with free agency off in 1900 for one league you can also try it with it on. Its just a case of you learning what different setups do and how historically accurate it is for you while keeping the game fun.

I would check out the Dynasty forums for the many ways of playing the game. You may not play the game the same way but someone might have something setup a certain way that you might like.
