Alternately, could I somehow "trick" the game into thinking that a player only has 1 year, instead or 4?
Sure. Just edit the contract so they have the years left that you want rather than letting the game engine handle it (i.e. give a first-year player a 6-year, $300,000 contract). You'll have to give up on arbitration or calculate it yourself, though. This was more useful before there was arbitration. It'd be nice if there was some way to offer free agents arbitration, like MLB.
