I just got off the phone with Reed Stevenson and he provided some details I wanted to pass along. He also provided some updates. He was pretty upset, and asked that I not quote him, but I will pass on the gist.
The projected budget room is at -$12,216,950. The scouting budget is at $1,159,450 while league average is $2,318,900. Reed wants to raise this number but the ownership has refused.
There has been no success on lowering the salary. He told me he has tried without success. Apparently the economy is impacting everyone, and teams just aren't willing to take on salary. If he can't move salary before the season starts, the scouting budget can't be increased, and he is feeling really handicapped.
One final note. Upcoming interviews are going to be postponed as the off season is shaping up to go by quickly and potentially uneventful. We will get an interview at the start of Spring Training, and perhaps throughout, or maybe the weekly ones will happen once the season starts.
