Mid-May Report
As you can see from the above, things are still going more or less the same. One thing that is a little disheartening is that my bullpen has had a pretty horrendous start to May. There are two relievers with a 5.40 ERA and that is the lowest out of the pen.
SP Darrell Stokes has had a good start to May. He is 2-0 3.93 so far this month.
SS Matt Arrington has had a power surge to start the month. He has been batting leadoff for most of the year and has started 2 games with HR. He has had another 2 in the past 15 days as well. He had 6 in 81 games last season before being injured.
1B Henry Hansen is still continuing his torrid pace to start the year. He now has a .317-14-31 line and is #2 in the NL in Home Runs.
C Pedro Castro strained a hip muscle and was listed as day-to-day but was kept out for the better part of a week.
The bottom 5 in average for May are ALL of my outfielders including
Craig Gill.
2B Frank McDonald has been hot in May and has a 14 game hit streak going. He had a 13 game hit streak in April of last season and again has put together a nice streak to help solidify his hold on the second base job.
Bad Loss # 1
5/9 Aces 13, Generals 3
The Aces jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first half-inning on a
LF Jim Meany home run. We came storming back with 3 in the bottom half of the inning thanks to shaky control by
Aces SP Raul Rocha. After that it was tee-off time on Joaquin Alonso. In 3+ innings he gave up 8 hits, and 5 walks that led to 8 runs before striking out the side to end the 4th.
RP Barney Huddlestone also had control issues and gave up 2 hits and 4 walks in 2 innings that led to another 3 runs.
Aces SS Hernan Rodriguez went 5-6 with a 2B and HR. He also scored 2 runs and drove in 5.
Bad Loss #2
5/14 Protectors 7, Generals 0
SP Joaquin Alonso was involved in a semi-pitchers' duel with
SP Tsurayuki Kato. Alonso gave up a first inning solo shot to
1B Martin Hays and then gave up two more runs in the 5th. Meanwhile the Generals were being shut out by Kato. Then in the 7th, the Protectors managed to get a few guys on base and a big blast by
2B John Heller gave the Protectors their 7 run lead that they ended the game with.
Exciting Game #1
5/11 Generals 5, Sun Rays 4
SP Joe Wade made his ML Debut and went 6 innings scattering 8 hits and allowing 2 runs, both in the 2nd inning. The Generals plate a run in the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings to take a 3-2 lead.
MR Lee Bell comes in and pitches 2 scoreless innings of relief and gives way to
CL Edison Austin. Edison proceeds to give up a 9th inning 2-run HR to
CF David Washington. In the bottom on the 9th, against
Sun Rays CL Forrest Anderson,
3B Pablo Rodriguez leads off with a walk, while
1B Henry Hansen whiffs.
OF Orlando Navarro singles, sending Rodriguez to second and that is followed by a
CF Bart Evans strikeout.
2B Frank McDonald singles, tying up the game as Rodriguez comes around from second and the single sends Navarro to second.
C Doug Lynn, playing because of the strained hip to
C Pedro Castro is up and hits a single up the middle that scored Navarro and sends the Generals' Fans home happy.
Generals Notes/Injuries
As mentioned,
C Pedro Castro injured his hip and was day-to-day for about a week. He started one game and pinch-hit in another one or two games while the injury lingered. Pedro has sent me a note saying he would like to work on a new deal, however he is asking for $7 million a year. I am pretty sure that is not going to be possible given the team's financial situation.
