SPRING TRAINING
Spring training is over and the team is ready to head to north to Brooklyn to play the Knights in the opening series. It was a long spring training filled with the hope that a new season brings. Sadly, it seems this will not be a one season turnaround. The good news...
We didn't have the worst record in Spring Training. That went to the San Francisco Seals who were 8-16. We (along with the Las Vegas Aces) were 9-15.
Injury News
C Pedro Castro is back and playing after missing the last 7 months with a torn groin muscle. He was able to get in 6 spring training games.
SP Luis Ramirez is out for 5-6 weeks with a herniated disc in his back. He was 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA in 9.1 IP this spring.
Transactions
Picked up
MR Sherwood Goodman off of waivers from Brooklyn. He had a 3.60 ERA in 5 IP with us in the spring.

The pitchers had a decent spring. I was disappointed with the way
Darrell Stokes pitched. I was hoping he would cement the #1 spot with ease.
Doug Randolf had a great spring and was on the spring leaderboard for BB/9 and K/BB ratio.
Miguel Garcia was 2nd in the CBA in ERA this spring. He also had a wonderful spring.
Edison Austin also pitched well and showed great control.
Pitching Battle of the Spring -
Bill Davis and Lorenzo Zambrano held off Tatsui Nii, Wilson Moran and Martin Perez for the final 2 spots. The fact that both pitchers were somewhat serviceable last season for Boston helped them out in making the team this spring. Nii was probably deserving, but he wouldn't be the closer and I want him to get some work in at AAA as a middle reliever. If Nii gets brought up he will be the reliever with the best endurance and will need to be stretched out.

The batters did alright this spring. They showed more pop this spring than last spring. We had 6 players with 2 HR or more.
Bart Evans and Henry Hansen led the way with 3 each.
Frank McDonald was hitting the ball really well and led the team with a .383 average.
Orlando Navarro regressed a bit from his very nice September last season. He was getting timely hits though, which is one thing this team lacked last year.
Matt Arrington and Pedro Castro were disappointments this spring, however both were coming back from serious injuries.
Positional Battle of the Spring - The last infielder spot was won by Bartolomeu Arruante. He hit pretty well this spring and has tremendous speed and that helped him hold off John Fox, Roberto Silva and Brian Pitts. Brian Pitts was injured for 2 weeks in the spring and that didn't help him as he was not able to get the AB's he needed. Matt Arrington's slow spring was also a big factor as this gives me another true shortstop in case Matt doesn't show up at the plate.
