It actually adds to the degree of difficulty because well...how do you rate a bunch of guys who seem to have maxed out ratings? Stats come into play pretty heavily in the league for that reason.
It ebbs and flows. For about a decade and a half, pitchers dominated and now we're back to an era where hitters are the dominant cast of characters for the past decade or so.
Columbus only has one guy on the Top 20 players list of hitters or pitchers, so...that gives an idea of what sort of talent they're up against.
