You are doing a good job so far with this.
This poor team could've used Schmidt back in '72. One or two more power bats could have been enough to get them out of the cellar in real life. Good luck in trying to avoid the same fate as they did.
Are you using Bob Boone as your starting catcher or is Tim McCarver starting behind the dish? If you are starting Boone, make sure that you start McCarver whenever "Lefty" pitches. He was his personal catcher back then.
