Surge Sends Red Sox into AL East Lead

A late-May surge has sent the Boston Red Sox to the top of the Joy in Mudville American League East.

Fueled by seven wins in their last 10 games, the Red Sox have vaulted ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers. Included in that stretch was a three-game series at Fenway Park in which Boston took the first two games to overtake the Brewers by percentage points.

The Red Sox are finally getting a season out of outfielder Reggie Smith that was always forecast for the 32-year-old switch-hitter. Smith leads Boston in average (.315), home runs (10) and RBIs (33).

Veterans George "The Boomer" Scott and Jim Fregosi have also enjoyed solid seasons at the plate. Meanwhile, newcomers Steve Henderson and Willie Randolph have provided a youthful spark. Third baseman Ron Cey has yet to round into form due to missing time with strep throat.

Yet, pitching has been the real surprise for Boston. While the starters have struggled at times, the bullpen has sparkled. Twenty-four-year old Lance Rautzhan has gone a perfect 7-0 in 17 appearances. A pair of lefties, Luis Quintana and Sparky Lyle, have combined for 13 saves and five victories.

All this has mixed for an exciting start for Boston fans who have yet to see their Sox in the post-season.

Diamond JIM Notes: Detroit's Mickey Stanley became the seventh player in JIM history to get six hits in a single game. Stanley, who entered the game batting just .167, got his six hits in a 16-3 whlloping of Chicago. Stanley has been playing short stop in place of the injured Bob Bailor. Bake McBride of Oakland was the last to accomplish the feat, back in 1975 . . . Pittsburgh's Willie Stargell leads the JIM with 15 home runs. The Pirate slugger has taken first place on the JIM career home run leader list. Stargell now has 208 lifetime longballs and is on pace to set a single-season homer mark with 53 round-trippers . . . Houston All-Star Cesar Cedeno has overtaken Tony Perez as the all-time RBI leader . . . California infielder Jorge Orta is the early favorite to win Comeback Player of the Year. Orta leads all JIM batters with 50 RBIs. That figure works out to a projection of 165 knocked in by season's end . . . Seattle has been shut out four times this season. Toronto, the other JIM expansion club, has been whitewashed three times . . . Five players collected five-hit games in May. They were: Dave Concepcion and Ken Griffey of the Reds, Johnny Grubb of the Orioles, Phil Garner of the Phillies and Dave Parker of the Indians.
