Waleska Bombs Marston 9-5
Waleska went wild in the 7-run fifth to bomb first place Marston 9-5 at Legends Field. The Westerners unloaded 12 hits and three homers to pound out an easy triumph. Right fielder Charley Williamson (.316) hit a two-run blast in the fourth and first baseman Freddie Shelton (.295) and center fielder Rick Vaughn (.300) rapped three-run homers in the fifth inning. On the mound Smokey Joe Carter (17-13) got credit for the win, going eight innings and surrendering five runs and eight hits, but only three were earned. Lenny Milazzo (0-1 3.97) staggered through the last inning by loading the bases, but got out of it unscathed. Nine first baseman Chuck Barrett's (.268) 10th home run gave Marston a short-lived 4-2 lead in the fourth. After that, it was all downhill for the Nine.
First place Marston (81-60) is 16 games ahead of the fourth place Westerners (65-76).
Wolf's 3-Run HR Lifts 'Jacks Over Rattlers 4-1
At Riverside Stadium in Forest City, the Lumberjacks rode the right arm of Glenn Moore and the big bat of Jesse Wolf to a 4-1 triumph over the Sugar Valley Rattlers. Moore went the distance, gave up only five hits, fanned four and walked two. Only Tommy Sonnier's (.262) 17th homer spoiled his shutout. All of Forest City's runs came via the longball.
