Los Angeles--A year after a record-setting Joy in Mudville All-Star performance, Ken Griffey won't be playing in this year's Mid-Summer Classic at Dodger Stadium.
Despite a .302 average, Griffey was passed over for the National League All-Stars. Last summer, the Cincinnati outfielder went 5-for-5 as the NL Stars clipped the AL 5-0 at Shea Stadium in New York.
Instead of Griffey, the NL outfield is comprised of San Diego's Jim Rice, Houston's Cesar Cedeno and New York's Steve Braun. Reserves are Rusty Staub (Atlanta), Greg Luzinski (Philadelphia) and Ellis Valentine (St. Louis).
In fact, no Cincinnati players will suit up for the NL. Defending JIM Houston landed seven players on the All-Star team. Six San Diego and five St. Louis players were selected respectively.
Over in the American League, Detroit and Baltimore each had four players chosen to play. California, Cleveland, Minnesota and Oakland all added three players to the AL roster.
The all-time All-Star series is tied at three games apiece. Thus, Tuesday's game serves as the rubber match.
The AL will start Baltimore right-hander Tom Seaver. For the Oriole ace, this will mark his second All-Star starting assignment. Seaver is a six-time All-Star.
The NL will counter with Houston's Frank Tanana. The Astro left-hander leads the JIM with a 17-5 record and a 1.95 ERA.
Like Seaver, Houston second baseman Joe Morgan is making his sixth All-Star appearance. Pittsburgh third baseman Richie Hebner is the only other player to make six All-Star appearances. Hebner was not selected this year.
Other All-Star Notes: Philadelphia catcher Tim McCarver has been named to the NL All-Stars for the second time in his career. The 34-year-old Memphis native last made the All-Star team back in 1970 . . . St. Louis catcher Ted Simmons will make his fifth appearance for the NL Stars . . . Baltimore pitcher Jon Matlack had his All-Star string snapped at five straight appearances . . . After three AL All-Star selections, Montreal short stop Toby Harrah will start for the Nationals.
