Tycobbian Union - East Division
Ninjas Sneak by Stallions 6-5
First place Ginza captured the rubbler game of the five-game series with a 6-5 victory over South Fork at Ninja Stadium. Right fielder Charlie Campbell's two-run homer in the sixth proved to be the game-winner. It was Campbell's 15th of the season. Starters Toshiharu Ito of Ginza and Ken Olson of South Fork both had rude beginnings. The Ninjas took a 4-3 lead after just one inning, but both hurlers settled down and went the distance, each giving up only two runs over the last eight innings. Ito (12-4 2.61) won it, permitting five runs on seven hits with five Ks and three walks, while Olson (12-9 2.70) allowed six runs on seven hits, fanned seven and walked two in defeat. Campbell (.291) drove in three runs in the game with a pair of hits. First baseman Kenshin Yamamoto also had two hits and batted in two runs. The Stallions were led by right fielder Art Atkins (.317) with two hits and two RBIs and third baseman Glenn Holliday (.291) with his 25th home run.
Ginza (62-45), the Tycobbian Union East Division leader, boosted its lead over second place South Fork (59-50) to 4 games.
'Canes Robinson Blanks Nats, Stops 3-Game Steak
Ozarka's three-game winning string came to an end today as Cape Coral's wily veteran southpaw Wally Robinson crafted his third shutout and struck out 10 in blanking the Naturals 8-0. The 37-year-old Robinson (14-7 3.00) ran his record to 14-7 with a five-hitter and took over the TU lead in strikeouts with 166. The Hurricanes hammered 15 hits, led by right fielder Danny Mullins (.271) with 3-5, a homer and two RBIs. Third baseman Spook Estes (.284) and center fielder James Middleton also had three hits each. Catcher Fats Dalton (.181) and first baseman Rodger Wooten (.289) drove in two runs apiece for Cape Coral.
Robinson in 2001 has fashioned a 14-7 mark, 3.00 ERA and thrown 209 innings in 27 starts. Opposing clubs are batting .238 against him.
Cape Coral (54-54) won only two of the five-game series, but held on to third place in the division. The Hurricanes are 8.5 games behind the Tycobbian Union East leader, the Ginza Ninjas (62-45). Ozarka (52-55) is fourth and stands 10 games back in the race.
Hellcats Rip Zorros 8-4
Two newcomers to Hartsdale manager Zim Donner's pitching staff combined to topple Luxora today 8-4 at De la Vega Stadium. Tom Wiley (2-0 3.15) was a winner in his first start for the Hellcats. He went seven innings, gave up four runs and nine hits, then gave way to Ike Moore (3-2 4.15), who put down an eighth-inning threat and got credit for his first save by retiring all six batters he faced in the final two innings. Hartsdale left fielder Mac Faulkner (.500) went 3-5 with three RBIs, right fielder Mel Poe (.253) was 2-4 with two RBIs and third baseman Whiz Weaver (.283) had a perfect day, going 3-3 and scoring three times. Johnny Montel (8-13) suffered the loss, allowing five runs in the first three innings, two of them unearned.
The fifth place Luxora Zorros (49-58) are 13 games behind first place Ginza (62-45), while Hartsdale (47-61) is last in the division, 15.5 games out.
