Ruthlandian Union - North Division

Vipers Snap Blasters Win Streak, Zalewski Winner
Valmara's ace came through for them and snapped first place Colfax's three-game winning streak with a 5-1 victory. The Vipers hard-throwing southpaw Zarek Zalewski (14-6 2.52) limited the hard-hitting Blasters to just four hits and one run in seven innings with nine strikeouts and a walk. Closer Danny Blauser (8-4 2.38) worked the last two frames, allowed no runs and fanned three to nail down the verdict. Valmara went ahead 2-1 in the second inning on a two-run single by shortstop Matt Mazurek (.281) and added three more in the seventh when Mazurek doubled and scored on a two-base throwing error, right fielder Jet Kazmarek's (.318) groundout scored a run and Jan Szymanski (.274) singled in the final run. Loser Harry Manning (12-10 3.84) worked seven innings, gave up nine hits and five runs, two of them unearned. Colfax left fielder Cy Bartz (.267) had two doubles and an RBI.

Colfax (58-50) is still on top of the Ruthlandian Union North standings. The Blasters took three of the five games with third place Valmara (54-53). The Vipers are now 3.5 games off the pace.

Glasco Bombards Redhawks 10-7
The Glasco A's took charge with a four-run fifth to bombard Far Mountain 10-7 at Athletics Field. That put the Athletics in front to stay 9-5. Glasco rapped out 14 hits and were led by second baseman Barry McCord (.300) and third baseman Zach Byorvik (.251) with three RBIs each. Left fielder Ox Beauvais (.331) drove in a pair and shortstop Kyle Ballentine (.289) and center fielder Chet Reynolds (.288) batted in a run apiece. Byorvik (10) and Ballentine (6) hit homers for the Athletics, while right fielder Buck Bucholtz (.358) went 3-5 and scored three times, Beauvais was a perfect 4-4 and Byorvik and catcher Nick O'Neill (.224) had two hits each. Pacing the Far Mountain 15-hit attack were first baseman Royce Benson (.312) with four hits, three runs and an RBI, shortstop Joey Cannizzaro (.323) with three hits and two runs scored and Johnny Strickland with two runs batted in. Benson hit his 7th homer of the season and also had a triple. Second baseman Steve Kaminski (.335) doubled and tripled, driving in one and scoring once. Winning pitcher Charles Darby (13-11 3.70) only lasted six and one-third innings and was ripped for seven runs. He finally yielded to Ray Cook (4-4 1.77), who sat down the Redhawks without a run in the last two and two-thirds innings, struck out four and allowed one hit for his 12th save. Starter Sonny Elliott (13-10 3.24) was knocked out after four-plus innings. He gave up nine runs and suffered the setback in his worst outing of the season.

Second place Far Mountain (57-52) is still just 1.5 games back of first place Colfax (58-50), while Glasco (52-55) is in fifth place and trails by 5.5 games.

All-Stars Shell Vigilantes 12-5
The big bats of Elnora made it easy for pitcher Carl Costas as the All-Stars shelled Volusia for 16 hits and three homers in the 12-5 massacre. A four-run first highlighted by Paul Kesler's grand slam got them started and they never looked back. First baseman Kesler (.308) sparked the All-Stars with 5 RBIs. Right fielder Paul Giles (.278) and left fielder Quincy Peterson (.301) hit their 24th and 22nd homers respectively and drove in two runs each. Peterson was 4-4 and also scored three times, while second baseman Gil Foster (.359) and catcher Todd Simons both went 3-5. Volusia second baseman Francisco Abreu (.279) slugged his 22nd roundtripper and first baseman Alejandro Salazar (.289) slammed his 16th. Costas (10-10) cruised to the win, hurled seven innings and allowed five runs. He got relief help from Thurl Sherman (0-0 3.00), who worked the last two innings and held the V's scoreless. The loss went to starter Brian King (1-4 3.32), who didn't last two innings and was blitzed for six runs.

The defeat dropped Volusia (54-55) to the fourth spot in the RU North race, 4.5 games back. Elnora (49-59) is 9 games behind Colfax (58-50) and is in last place.
