Oscar Muniz Wins NABF Bantamweight Championship In Bloody Battle

Scranton Pa was the sight of this bloody war. Oscar Muniz (17-0-0-14) took on Frankie Duarte (14-1-1-4) in a match for the vacant NABF Bantamweight Championship. Both men came into this 12 rounder in excellant shape and just went toe to toe for 12 exciting rounds. Muniz' cutman Dave Tenny is to be commended for keeping Muniz in this match. After the third round Muniz had suffered a cut above the left eye and the same eye was also begining to swell. You knew you were in for a battle when early in the first a Muniz hook rattled Duarte who fired right back and never backed down. Over the course of the fight both men landed some incredible punches it was amazing no one visited the canvas thru eight rounds. In the ninth Duarte looking to catch a breather was lazy with a jab and a sizzling right hand counter from Muniz dropped Duarte for a nine count. Muniz waas unable to follow up as he was to tired. Also in the ninth round both Muniz and Duarte suffered cuts. Muniz under the left eye and Duarte over the forehead. So when the ninth round closed the whole left side of the face of Muniz was a mess. From the ninth round on Muniz controlled the action landing the harder cleaner punches, thats not to say Duarte did not have his moments. The way Muniz' face looked I was sure this would not goto the judges. The cuts reopend three times but the ringside physician was never called into play. When the scores were announced they were a little more lopsided then I thought. 115-114 for Duarte, 116-113 for Muniz and 117-112 for Muniz. I feel the fight was closer but Muniz definately earned the victory over the last four rounds.

In the co-feature we had #8 ranked Alfonso Zamora (22-1-0-22) taking on #9 ranked Nana Konadu (18-0-0-12). Both men were seeing action for the first time in 1986. Zamora was a beast as he was only landing bombs trying to get Konadu out of there. Late in the third a Zamora hook dropped Konadu for a nine count. Luckily for Konadu it was late in the round and Zamora was unable to follow up. Again in the fifth Zamora hurt Konadu with a straight right hand. Konadu got on his bicycle and survived Zamora's onslaught. Going into the eighth Zamora was well ahead on all three scorecards and he wen't looking for the kayo. and as he stepped in to get inside Konadu launched a picture perfect uppercut that caught Zamora cleanly and the crowd was just stunned as Zamora slumped face first to the canvas. Zamora tried to get to his feet but he had no control of his body and was counted out at 1:56 of the eighth round. No one expected the 3-1 underdog Konadu to stop Zamora with one punch but he has and is definately lining himself up nicely for a title shot.

Next we had #20 ranked Raul Perez (21-0-0-19) taking on #15 Daorung Chuvatana (16-1-0-16) in a scheduled 10 round bout. With the records of both men we were expecting an all out brawl and that was what we were treated to. Perez came out strong as he was able to drop the pre-prime Chuvatana for a nine count in the second round. Chuvatana finally was able to land some power shots on Perez in the fourth. Perez was rocked on several occasions none more worse then the seventh round when a Chuvatana hook exploed off the left side of his face and tore a cut over the left eyelid and left the eye swelling as the round closed. The tide seemed to be turning in Chuvatana's favor but late in the eighth round a Perez uppercut dropped Chuvatana for a 4 count. Perez then took over for the remainder of the fight even dropping Chuvatana once more in the tenth for a six count. Scores were all in favor of Perez 98-90, 98-89 and 98-91. Perez will likely make a move up in the rankings. Chuvatana should rebound from this bout. I look forward to seeing him fight again.

Next we had Joe Araki (12-3-2-1) looking to rebound from a 10 round unanimous decision loss to Enrique Pinder back in January taking on Freddy Jackson (7-4-1-1) who himself is looking to rebound from a 3 bout losing streak the last of which was a 6th round TKO loss at the hands of Sulley ****tu back in February. This was a very competative match that I had scored even thru four. At this point at least in my eye Jackson seemed to take over and clearly win the 5th, 6th and 7th rounds. The eighth was a slow round that may have been edged by Araki. I felt Jackson had done enough to earn the victory but the judges did not agree. Scores were 77-76 for Jackson and 76-76 twice. Jackson was a little down after the decision but did say he would like to meet Araki again and settle this.

Next we had Rollie Penaroya (2-0-0-2) taking on Koichi Yoshimura (0-3-0-0). At first all were a little concerned as Yoshimura was easily out boxing Penaroya thru three rounds until an explosive hook in the fourth ended the bout. Penaroya was behind on all three scorecards at the time of the stoppage.

In the opening bout we had Al Cabillan (0-0-2-0) facing Tsuramatsu Kouki (0-3-3-0) for the second time this year as Kouki held Cabillan to a draw two months ago. And again Cabillan wins the first two rounds convincingly and does nothing in the third and fourth round to again walk away with a draw.

In May Roberto Rubaldino (27-0-0-25) will face Johnny Carter (25-0-0-10) for the vacant WBA Title. Then in June Franco Zurlo (21-0-0-4) will meet Nana Konadu (18-0-0-12) for the Vacant WBC Championship. There is alos talk of Carlos Zarate (22-0-0-22) facing Ruben Olivares (21-0-0-21) for the vacant IBF Championship.
