Mets Land Closer, Minor League Catcher
The New York Mets are intent on staying in first place in the Joy in Mudville National League East.
Early Thursday morning, the Mets acquired closer Rawly Eastwick and minor league catcher Alan Ashby from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for New York's first-round pick in the upcoming June amateur draft.
The 25-yar-old right-hander addresses the Mets' need for a dependable reliever to finish out games. Eastwick recorded five saves with a 1.69 ERA in 11 appearances for Baltimore this season.
The 24-year-old Ashby will also give New York a younger presence at catcher. Ashby was hitting .254 with two home runs and 34 RBIs at the Triple-A level.
The first-place Mets are 38-25, four games ahead of second-place Pittsburgh.
Meanwhile, the trade means the Orioles will now turn over the closer role full-time to left-hander Tug McGraw. Eastwick and McGraw had shared Baltimore closer duties. Although shaky at times in the past, McGraw has saved six games this year for the Orioles this season. Ironically, McGraw is a former Met.
As a result of the trade, the Orioles now hold the sixth overall pick in the draft.
Baltimore is 30-27, seven games behind the first-place Detroit Tigers in the American League East.
