Brewers Deal Winfield to Expos for Top Pick

One is the lonliest number.

The Milwaukee Brewers traded former No. 1 overall pick Dave Winfield to the Montreal Expos Friday in exchange for this June's top selection in the amateur draft.

Winfield, the first pick in the 1972 draft, will join an Expo outfield that already features last year's No. 1 pick Andre Dawson.

Winfield was batting .309 with two home runs and six RBIs for Milwaukee this season.

The 24-year-old Winfield is a career .280 hitter. His best season came in 1974 when Winfield batted .304 with 16 homers and 89 RBIs.

Insiders report that the Brewers will likely take highly touted first baseman Eddie Murray with the top selection.

Milwaukee will also have the fifth or sixth pick in the draft. Both the Brewers and Angels tied for the fifth lowest total wins last season. A coin flip will determine which team selects in the No. 5 slot.
