If they simply removed the extra days off inserted last year, the World Series goes back to starting on a Saturday and potentially running over two weekends, which is exactly what FOX doesn't want. As long as MLB is beholding to the television networks for all that money, it's going to have to accede to the network's wishes about a one weekend World Series.

The trick here is to create a post-season schedule which allows for a World Series which starts on a Wednesday and thus runs over only one weekend but doesn't take as long to play overall as the current schedule. To do this you need to cut not only the four extra days inserted last year, but an additional four days, or a total of eight days. To achieve that travel days would have to be eliminated.
