A's Acquire North from Orioles
The Oakland A's acquired center fielder Bill North and a minor league first baseman from the Baltimore Orioles late Monday night.
The A's shipped minor league second baseman Rodney Scott and their second-round pick in the June amateur draft for North and Doug Howard.
North (shown below) will provide Oakland with a solid leadoff man. Despite a slow start this season, North is a proven veteran with speed. Heading into this year, North ranked eighth among Joy in Mudville League career stolen base leaders with 191 thefts.
This season, the 27-year-old North ranks second among American League leaders with nine stolen bases.
Last season, North hit .302. In addition, the Seattle native led the Orioles with 101 runs scored and 38 stolen bases.
The 28-year-old Howard was batting .362 with four home runs and 22 RBIs in the Baltimore minor league system.
Scott, meanwhile, impressed scouts with a productive spring training. The 22-year-old second baseman was hitting .373 in Class-AA ball. Scott was the A's second-round selection in the 1974 amateur draft.
