Bosox Deal Perry for Maddox in Four-Player Swap
The Boston Red Sox traded veteran pitcher Gaylord Perry and reserve outfielder Joe Lahoud to the California Angels for center fielder Garry Maddox and a minor league pitcher Monday.
Acquired just last season from San Francisco, the 37-year-old Perry will take the Angels' starting rotation spot opened by an injury to rookie Mark Fidrych. Perry was 3-1 with a 2.70 ERA in four starts with Boston.
The 29-year-old Lahoud appeared in nine games for the Red Sox. He was batting .242 with three RBIs. The left-handed hitting Lahoud has been slowed by a sore knee this season.
Maddox will give Boston a strong defensive outfielder. The 26-year-old batted .286 with two home runs and 10 RBIs with California. He is a career .278 hitter.
The minor league pitcher is Larry Demery, a 22-year-old right-hander in Triple-A ball.
